Before your first jump

Which words do you need for a tandem skydive?

About a dozen, and they'll stick without any effort. On the ground you're fitted with the passenger harness and every attachment is checked; in the aircraft, a 15 to 20-minute climb facing the Atlas; at the door, the banana arch; then the drogue, around 50 seconds of freefall, deployment at about 1,500 m and 5 to 7 minutes of canopy flight, legs up for landing.

Skydiving basics

Skydiving, drop zone, freefall, canopy: the words you hear as soon as you arrive at a jump site. They are also the ones that translate least well, so every definition gives the French equivalent used at our FFP-approved club, to help you follow any briefing or video.

Skydiving

Equivalents: fr Parachutisme · sv Fallskärmshoppning · no Fallskjermhopping · es Paracaidismo · de Fallschirmspringen · ru Прыжки с парашютом · it Paracadutismo · ar القفز المظلي · pl Skoki spadochronowe · da Faldskærmsudspring · pt Paraquedismo · nl Parachutespringen · fi Laskuvarjohyppääminen

The sport of jumping from an aircraft, flying in freefall, then landing under a parachute. In French it is “parachutisme”, and a single jump is “un saut en parachute”. At PACMA, you exit at about 4,000 m above the Tadla plain in Morocco.

Also called: parachuting, skydive

Parachute

Equivalents: sv Fallskärm · no Fallskjerm · es Paracaídas · de Fallschirm · ru Парашют · it Paracadute · ar المظلة · pl Spadochron · da Faldskærm · pt Paraquedas · fi Laskuvarjo

A canopy that slows the descent of a person or a load. The word is French, from “para-” (protecting against) and “chute” (fall), and English kept it unchanged. A modern sport parachute is a steerable wing: main canopy, reserve and AAD packed together in one harness-container.

Skydiver

Equivalents: fr Parachutiste · sv Fallskärmshoppare · no Fallskjermhopper · es Paracaidista · de Fallschirmspringer · ru Парашютист · it Paracadutista · ar المظلي · pl Skoczek spadochronowy · da Faldskærmsudspringer · pt Paraquedista · nl Parachutist · fi Laskuvarjohyppääjä

A person who skydives. In French: “parachutiste”. “Parachutist” also exists in English but mostly refers to military jumpers. A student is still in training; a licensed skydiver jumps independently.

Drop zone (DZ)

Equivalents: fr Dropzone (DZ, zone de saut) · sv Hoppfält (dropzone, DZ) · no Hoppfelt (dropzone, DZ) · es Zona de salto (dropzone, DZ) · de Sprungplatz (Dropzone, DZ) · ru Дропзона (DZ, парашютный аэродром) · it Dropzone (DZ, zona di lancio) · ar منطقة القفز (dropzone، DZ) · pl Strefa spadochronowa (DZ) · da Dropzone (DZ, springplads) · pt Zona de saltos (dropzone, DZ) · nl Dropzone (DZ) · fi Hyppykenttä (dropzone, DZ)

A place where skydiving happens: an airfield, its landing area and everything that keeps the jumps running (manifest, packing area, briefing room). Short form: “DZ”. PACMA's drop zone is at Beni Mellal airport, at the foot of the Middle Atlas, a 2-hour drive from Casablanca.

Also called: DZ, dropzone

Tandem skydive

Equivalents: fr Saut en tandem · sv Tandemhopp · no Tandemhopp · es Salto en tándem · de Tandemsprung · ru Прыжок в тандеме · it Lancio in tandem · ar القفزة الترادفية · pl Skok w tandemie · da Tandemspring · pt Salto tandem · nl Tandemsprong · fi Tandemhyppy

A skydive for two: you are attached by a harness to a tandem instructor who handles the exit, the deployment and the landing. No experience is needed, just a short briefing. At PACMA: around 50 seconds of freefall from 4,000 m, for €250.

Also called: tandem jump, tandem skydiving

Freefall

Equivalents: fr Chute libre · sv Fritt fall · no Fritt fall · es Caída libre · de Freier Fall · ru Свободное падение · it Caduta libera · ar السقوط الحر · pl Swobodne spadanie · da Frit fald · pt Queda livre · nl Vrije val · fi Vapaapudotus

The part of the jump between leaving the aircraft and opening the parachute. From 4,000 m it lasts about 50 seconds at close to 200 km/h belly-to-earth, until deployment at around 1,500 m. The falling feeling fades within seconds: the air holds you up.

Also called: free fall

Canopy

Equivalents: fr Voile · sv Skärm · no Skjerm · es Campana · de Schirm · ru Купол · it Vela · ar المظلة المفتوحة (canopy) · pl Czasza · da Skærm · pt Velame · nl Scherm · fi Varjo (kupu)

The parachute once it is open. Sport canopies are rectangular ram-air wings made of cells that fill with air; they fly forward and are steered with two toggles. The main canopy is used on every jump, the reserve only if something goes wrong.

Also called: wing

Instructor

FFP term

Equivalents: fr Moniteur · sv Instruktör · no Instruktør · de Lehrer · ru Инструктор · it Istruttore · ar المدرّب · pl Instruktor · da Instruktør · pt Instrutor · nl Instructeur · fi Kouluttaja

An experienced skydiver qualified to train students or take passengers. At an FFP-approved club like PACMA, instruction follows the federation's rules: tandem instructors for tandem jumps, PAC (AFF) instructors for training.

Skydiving season

At PACMA

Equivalents: fr Saison de parachutisme · sv Fallskärmssäsong · no Fallskjermsesong · es Temporada de paracaidismo · de Fallschirmsprungsaison · ru Парашютный сезон · it Stagione di paracadutismo · ar موسم القفز المظلي · pl Sezon spadochronowy · da Faldskærmssæson · pt Temporada de paraquedismo · nl Springseizoen · fi Laskuvarjokausi

The period when a drop zone is open. In northern Europe many centres close or slow down in winter; PACMA does the opposite: the season runs from the first weekend of December to the first weekend of April, from 5 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, every day from 8:30 am to 6 pm.

What do the tandem briefing words mean?

They describe your jump, in order: the passenger harness, the banana arch at exit, the drogue that stabilises the pair, around 50 seconds of freefall, then legs up for landing. The tandem instructor handles everything else; you enjoy the Atlas on the horizon from 4,000 m.

Tandem instructor (TI)

Equivalents: fr Moniteur tandem · sv Tandeminstruktör · no Tandeminstruktør · es Instructor de tándem · de Tandemmaster · ru Тандем-инструктор · it Istruttore tandem · ar مدرّب القفز الترادفي · pl Instruktor tandemowy · da Tandeminstruktør · pt Instrutor de tandem · nl Tandeminstructeur (TI) · fi Tandemhyppymestari

A skydiver holding a tandem rating, authorised to jump with a passenger. They wear the two-person rig, throw the drogue, watch the altitude, deploy, fly the canopy and handle the landing. Your only job: enjoy it and follow their instructions.

Also called: tandem master, TI

Tandem passenger

At PACMA

Equivalents: fr Passager tandem · sv Tandempassagerare · no Tandemelev (passasjer) · es Pasajero de tándem · de Tandempassagier · ru Пассажир тандема · it Passeggero del tandem · ar راكب القفزة الترادفية · pl Pasażer tandemu · da Tandempassager · pt Passageiro de tandem · nl Tandempassagier · fi Tandemhyppääjä

The person discovering freefall, attached in front of the instructor. Requirements at PACMA: no experience, a maximum weight of 90 kg dressed, and a medical certificate (or the on-site medical check). The minimum age is shown on the tandem page.

Also called: tandem student

Passenger harness

Equivalents: fr Harnais passager · sv Passagerarsele · no Passasjersele · es Arnés del pasajero · de Passagiergurtzeug · ru Подвесная система пассажира · it Imbragatura del passeggero · ar حزام الراكب · pl Uprząż pasażera · da Passagerseletøj · pt Arnês do passageiro · nl Passagiersharnas · fi Tandemhyppääjän valjaat

The harness you put on before boarding: leg, chest and shoulder straps adjusted to your size. In the aircraft, the instructor clips it to their own at four points (two at the shoulders, two at the hips) and checks every attachment before exit.

Also called: harness

Drogue

Equivalents: fr Drogue (parachute de stabilisation) · sv Drogue (stabiliseringsskärm) · no Drogue (stabiliseringsskjerm) · es Drogue (paracaídas estabilizador) · de Drogue (Stabilisierungsschirm) · ru Стабилизатор (стабилизирующий парашют) · it Drogue (paracadute stabilizzatore) · ar مظلة التثبيت (drogue) · pl Drogue (spadochron stabilizujący) · da Drogue (stabiliseringsskærm) · pt Drogue (paraquedas estabilizador) · nl Drogue (stabilisatieparachute) · fi Jarruvarjo (drogue)

A small parachute the tandem instructor throws a few seconds after exit. It stabilises the pair and keeps the fall at about 200 km/h, the speed of a solo skydiver, which allows nearly 50 seconds of freefall. At deployment, it also pulls out the main canopy.

Also called: drogue chute

Arch (banana position)

Equivalents: fr Position banane (cambrure) · sv Bananposition (svank) · no «Bananen» (svai) · es Posición de plátano (arqueo) · de Banane (Freifallhaltung) · ru Положение «банан» (прогиб) · it Posizione a banana (inarcamento) · ar وضعية «الموزة» (التقوّس) · pl Pozycja wygięta w łuk · da Bananstilling (svaj) · pt Posição de banana (arqueamento) · nl Banaanhouding (arch) · fi Kaariasento (kaari)

The basic freefall position: hips pushed towards the ground, head back, legs slightly bent behind you. Arched, the body settles naturally belly-to-earth. In a tandem it is the main instruction: “banana”.

Also called: banana, arch position

Legs up (tandem landing)

Equivalents: fr Jambes relevées (atterrissage tandem) · sv Benen upp (tandemlandning) · no Beina opp (tandemlanding) · es Piernas levantadas (aterrizaje en tándem) · de Beine hoch (Tandemlandung) · ru Ноги вверх (приземление в тандеме) · it Gambe sollevate (atterraggio in tandem) · ar رفع الساقين (الهبوط الترادفي) · pl Nogi w górę (lądowanie w tandemie) · da Benene op (tandemlanding) · pt Pernas levantadas (aterragem em tandem) · nl Benen omhoog (tandemlanding) · fi Jalat ylös (tandemlaskeutuminen)

The landing instruction for a tandem passenger: as the ground approaches, you lift your legs out in front so the instructor can land the pair, usually sliding in on your bottom, or standing up if they decide so. It is the last move of the briefing.

From words to 4,000 m

Live these words in Beni Mellal this winter

Around 50 seconds of freefall facing the Atlas, harnessed to a tandem instructor from an FFP-approved club who takes care of everything: €250 per jump, with video and photos as an option (€100) so you can relive every second. Open every day from 5 December 2026 to 4 April 2027.

What happens in the aircraft?

At PACMA, the Pilatus PC-6 Porter carries 9 skydivers and climbs to about 4,000 m in 15 to 20 minutes. Manifest has built the load, the jumpmaster picks the spot on jump run, then groups exit in a set order, a few seconds apart, so they open well away from each other.

Wind dummy

Drop zone slang

Equivalents: de Wind Dummy · ar مستكشف الريح (wind dummy) · fi Wind dummy (tuulikoe)

The first skydiver to jump when conditions are uncertain, to read the wind under canopy and help the drop zone decide whether others can go. The name is a gentle joke: a dummy sent to test the wind.

What happens in freefall?

After about ten seconds you reach terminal velocity, around 200 km/h belly-to-earth. The air holds you up: this is the relative wind. From 4,000 m, freefall lasts nearly 50 seconds until break-off and deployment at around 1,500 m. These words describe how you fly it and stay aware of altitude.

Terminal velocity

Equivalents: fr Vitesse terminale (vitesse limite) · sv Gränshastighet (terminalhastighet) · no Terminalhastighet · es Velocidad terminal (velocidad límite) · de Endgeschwindigkeit · ru Предельная скорость (установившаяся скорость) · it Velocità terminale (velocità limite) · ar السرعة النهائية (السرعة الحدّية) · pl Prędkość graniczna · da Terminalhastighed (sluthastighed) · pt Velocidade terminal (velocidade limite) · nl Eindsnelheid (terminal velocity) · fi Rajanopeus (loppunopeus)

The top speed reached in freefall, when air resistance equals weight. You reach it after about ten seconds: around 200 km/h belly-to-earth, much faster head-down. A tandem, slowed by its drogue, also falls at about 200 km/h.

Also called: terminal speed

Relative wind

Equivalents: fr Vent relatif · sv Relativ vind · no Relativ vind · es Viento relativo · de Relativer Wind · ru Набегающий поток · it Vento relativo · ar الرياح النسبية · pl Wiatr względny · da Relativ vind · pt Vento relativo · nl Relatieve wind · fi Suhteellinen ilmavirta

The airflow you feel relative to your body. At exit it comes from the front (the aircraft's speed), then within seconds from below: that “wind” is what you lean on to fly in freefall.

See also: Exit, Freefall

Belly-to-earth

How do canopy flight and landing work?

Once the canopy is open, you fly for 5 to 7 minutes, steering with two toggles. You follow a landing pattern, like an aircraft, and land into the wind with a flare. In a tandem, the instructor flies and you simply lift your legs for landing.

How is skydiving safety organised?

Through rules and redundant gear: a gear check before every jump, a reserve packed by a qualified rigger, an AAD, procedures rehearsed on the ground. At an FFP-approved club like PACMA, the technical director also decides whether to jump depending on the weather.

Certificates, licences and training: FFP and USPA

Two systems coexist: in France, the FFP issues certificates (“brevets” A, B, BPA, C, D) and a yearly licence; in the United States, the USPA issues A to D licences. You learn through PAC, the French equivalent of AFF. At PACMA everything follows FFP rules, from the first AFF jump to licensed fun jumps.

FFP, USPA and British Skydiving licences compared

Compare certificates and licences in an instant by the minimum number of jumps each federation requires, with the source and the date it was checked.

Start from

British Skydiving A · 18 jumps minimum

Comparison on jump count only: every licence also requires skills signed off by an instructor, and no equivalence is automatic. At PACMA, an FFP-approved club, the technical director checks your licence, insurance and logbook with you, and may ask for a check jump: a quick formality so you can jump with total peace of mind.

After the tandem?

Jump under your own parachute

The AFF first jump (€500) gives you freefall under your own canopy, with two instructors beside you. The full 7-jump course (€1,300) sets you on your way to your A certificate, in the middle of winter and in the sun.

What are the skydiving disciplines?

Once licensed, you choose how you fly: belly in formation skydiving, every orientation in freefly, in a wingsuit, docked under canopy in CRW, or in accuracy landing. These words also help tell skydiving apart from related activities such as BASE jumping or paragliding.

Weather: when can you jump?

When you can see the ground, the ground wind stays within limits and gusts are calm. The technical director decides using the winds aloft, the cloud ceiling and official reports. At PACMA, a jump cancelled for weather is moved free of charge or turned into a credit.

METAR

Equivalents: ar نشرة METAR

An airport's official weather report, issued at regular intervals: wind, visibility, cloud, temperature, pressure. For a drop zone based on an airport, it helps plan the day.

Drop zone life and skydiver slang

Skydivers have their own language, mostly English, and you pick it up fast: “blue skies” to say hello, “dirt dive” to rehearse a jump, “boogie” for a party. At PACMA you will also hear it under the caidal tent at the lunchtime buffet by the runway, with your companions.

Boogie

Blue skies

Drop zone slang

Equivalents: de Blue Skies · ar عبارة «Blue skies»

Skydivers' hello and goodbye, whatever their language: a wish for blue skies, meaning good jumps. You will also see it at the end of messages.

Skydiving vocabulary: frequently asked questions

Message
What is the difference between skydiving and parachuting?

Skydiving means jumping from an aircraft and flying in freefall before opening the parachute; parachuting is the broader term, used above all for military or static-line jumps that open straight away. A single jump is “a skydive”. In French, both are “parachutisme”, and a jump is “un saut en parachute”. Now you can hold your own on any drop zone in the world!

What does DZ mean in skydiving?

DZ stands for drop zone: the airfield, the landing area and everything that brings the jumps to life (manifest, packing area, briefing room). PACMA's drop zone is waiting for you at Beni Mellal airport in Morocco, at the foot of the Middle Atlas, a 2-hour drive from Casablanca and 2.5 hours from Marrakech.

What is a load in skydiving?

A load is one flight of the aircraft with the skydivers on board. Manifest puts everyone on a load and makes the calls before boarding. At PACMA, each load of the Pilatus PC-6 carries up to 9 skydivers and climbs to about 4,000 m in 15 to 20 minutes, facing the Atlas peaks.

What does blue skies mean?

It's how skydivers all over the world say hello and goodbye: a wish for blue skies, in other words great jumps. You'll hear it at every drop zone and read it at the end of messages between skydivers, whatever their language. Soon it will be yours too.

What is the difference between AFF and PAC?

None in substance: PAC (“progression accompagnée en chute”) is the French name for AFF (Accelerated Freefall). Either way, you jump under your own parachute, held by two instructors on the first jump, then progress through levels to solo. At PACMA, your AFF first jump costs €500.

Is a USPA licence the same as an FFP licence?

No. A USPA licence (A, B, C, D) shows your skill level; in France that is the “brevet”, while the FFP “licence” is a yearly membership linked to insurance. To jump at PACMA, all you need to show is a valid licence or certificate, valid insurance and your logbook.

What do you learn in a tandem skydiving briefing?

Three simple moves you'll master in minutes: head back and hands on your harness at exit, the banana arch during freefall, and legs up for landing. Your tandem instructor handles the drogue, the deployment at about 1,500 m and the canopy flight; you simply savour the 50 seconds of freefall.

You have the words. Now there's only the sky.

Tandem for €250 from 4,000 m, AFF first jump for €500, open every day from 5 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. Pick your date and we'll take care of the rest.
